Google Allows Low-Quality Product Images in Ads
  • Low-Quality Images Can Still Appear: Google Merchant Center now allows products with blurry, pixelated, or low-resolution images to appear in Google Search ads and free product listings, replacing previous guidance that warned of possible restrictions.
  • Updated Image Size Requirements: Google has updated its minimum product image size requirement to 500 × 500 pixels. Merchants should maintain clear, high-quality images to improve product presentation and encourage clicks.

Google has updated its Google Merchant Center guidance to clarify that products with low-quality images can still appear in Google Search ads and free product listings. The change means that issues such as blurry, pixelated or low-resolution images will no longer automatically prevent products fro3m being displayed.

What Has Changed?

The updated help document now states that products with poor image quality can continue to appear in ads and free listings. This replaces the previous guidance, which warned that such products might be restricted from appearing until their image quality improved.

The change gives merchants more clarity on how Google handles product images that do not meet its quality expectations.

Will Poor Images Affect Product Performance?

While the products might keep appearing, poor image clarity might be a hindrance to their effectiveness. Poor quality images make products look unappealing and reduce the possibility of people clicking on the images. The merchants need to keep using quality images to showcase their products.

Google Also Updates Image Size Requirements

Google recently updated its minimum image size requirements for product listings in Merchant Center to 500 × 500 pixels. Merchants should review their product images to ensure they meet the latest specifications.

 Who Reported the Change?

Hana Kobzova has drawn attention to the update in PPC News Feed stating that now products featuring low quality pictures can be featured in both ads and free listing.

The update helps us to understand how Google deals with low quality pictures, however, merchants have to keep pictures quality high and follow all the rules of Merchant Center.
